Kathleen “Kate” Riley Chance, aged 92, of
Newport, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, in Genesis Millville Center.
Born and raised in Cedarville, N. J., on Jan. 9, 1912, she was the daughter
of the late James and Minnie Truitt Riley. She was a long time resident of
Newport, from 1936 until her failing health in 2003.
The wife of the late George Campbell Chance, Kate, along with her husband,
owned the Central Garage in Newport. She was also employed by the Downe
Township School District in the cafeteria until her retirement in 1974. She
was a member of Newport Baptist Church. She loved jigsaw puzzles, playing
pinochle and spending time with her husband fishing on their boat in the
Delaware Bay.
Kate was the youngest of six children and was predeceased by her three
sisters, Esther Andrews, Mary Crawford and Thelma Taylor, as well as her two
brothers, Cleaver “Pete” Riley and Alvin “Ephe” Riley. She is survived by a
devoted son, Donald G. Chance and his wife Mary Meyer Chance of Newport; two
granddaughters, Sharon Chance of Newport and Donna Chance of Fairton; two
great grandchildren, Geoffrey Smith and Rebecca Chance Sayers of Newport and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 160 Main St.,
Cedarville, on Saturday morning, Dec. 11, at 11:00 O’clock. Burial will be
in Newport Baptist Cemetery, Downe Township. Friends will be received
Saturday morning between 10:00 and 11:00 O’clock, prior to the services at
