Gladys L. Pierce
 

Gladys L. Pierce, age 93, of Gouldtown, died Thursday morning, May 27, 2004 at her home. She had been in declining health for the past year.

Born in Bridgeton, the daughter of the late Sylvester T. Ves Showell and Charlotte Harris Showell, she was the wife of the late Preston H. Pierce. She had been a Gouldtown resident most of her life.

Before her retirement 18 years ago, Gladys had been a permanent substitute teacher at the Gouldtown Elementary School for 28 years, and also a reading aide at the Fairfield Primary School.

She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gouldtown Volunteer Fire Company, having served as a former President and recording secretary and was a member of Trinity A.M.E. Church in Gouldtown, having served as stewardess and member of the Women’s Choir. Gladys’ also had served as a 4-H leader in Home Economics in Cumberland County and had been a member of the Gouldtown PTA, having served as a past President.

Survivors include three daughters, Elaine V. Morris of Gouldtown, Alvetta M. Bailey of Willingboro and Delora V. Ferebee of Irvington; three sons, Maynard P. Pierce of Kernersville, N.C., Anthony G. Pierce of Bridgeton and Nathan Gould of Baltimore, MD; sixteen grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Syretha Carter and Leona Showell and one brother-in-law, William Pierce. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Bernice E. Webster, a brother, Anthony Showell and two sisters, Thelma Lollie and Pauline Comer.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon, June 1, at 12:00 O’clock in the Trinity A.M.E. Church in Gouldtown. Burial will be in Gouldtown Memorial Park. Friends will be received on Tuesday between the hours of 10:00 and 12:00 noon, prior to the services at the church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Padgett Funeral Home, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township.
