George E. Collins, Jr., 88, of Greenwich,
husband of Grace Milbourne Collins, died Sunday, June 26, 2005, in Burdette
Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Cape May Court House, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Collins was born in North Hampton County, Va. And was the son of the
late George E. and Mary West Collins. He had been a resident of Greenwich
Township for most of his adult life.
Prior to his retirement in 1982, he had been employed with Anchor Hocking
Glass Co. in Salem for 27 years. Before that to that he had worked in the
Oyster Industry in both Port Norris and Greenwich.
George was a member of the Bridgeton Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses,
where he served faithfully as an Elder for several years. An avid hunter,
fisherman and gardener, George will be remembered for the beautiful produce
from his garden that he often shared with friends and neighbors. A few years
ago, the beauty of his garden was captured by a photographer and featured in
an Extraordinary New Jersey Magazine. He was a Veteran of World War II,
serving with the U. S. Army in Germany in the European Theater.
Besides his wife Grace, survivors include: four sons, Nelson P. Thomas,
Royal Oak, Md., Alonzo Thomas and George E. Collins, III, both of Bridgeton
and Lester Collins, Pilesgrove Township; two daughters, Leslie Pierce,
Millville and Freda M. Wright, Bridgeton; two brothers, Preston L. Kellam
and Elton M. Rollins, both of Accomac County, Va.; four sisters, Eva S.
Johnson, Hopewell Township, Eunice L. Kellam, Cora L. Chisum and Frances A.
Bailey, all of Accomac County, Va.; two son-in-law, four daughters-in-law,
several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Darrel “Fred”;
three sisters, Margaret J. Trusty, Maggie L. Thomas and Mary V. Burton; one
grandson and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning, July 1, at 11:00 O’clock, in
the Bridgeton Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Irving Avenue, Bridgeton.
Burial will be in Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Hopewell Township. A
viewing will be held Friday morning between 10:00 and 11:00 O’clock, prior
to the services at the Kingdom Hall. Funeral arrangements are under the
