Sophia Loper
 

Sophia Loper, age 90 of Fortescue died Sunday morning, May 22, 2005 at the South Jersey Regional Medical Center in Vineland after a brief illness.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Helen Grandeski Derecky and stepdaughter of the late Felix Derecky. She was the wife of the late Mervin M. Loper and had been a Fortescue resident since 1947 moving there from Newport.

Prior to her retirement in 1978, Mrs. Loper had been employed with the F.W. Woolworth Company store in Bridgeton for 37 years.

A 1932 graduate of Bridgeton High School, Mrs. Loper was a member of the Fortescue Chapel where she had been church treasurer for over 50 years, the Fortescue Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and the Fortescue Community Guild where she had also served as treasurer for over 50 years. A former member of the National Advanced Red Cross, she was also involved as a member of the New Jersey Civil Defense Corp in the late 1940’s.

She is survived by a brother, Theodore Derecky of Newport and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Felix Derecky, Richard Dashuta and Stanley Dashuta.

Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 160 Main Street, Cedarville on Wednesday, May 25th at 11 a.m. with Chaplain Frank Green officiating.

Burial will be made at Newport Baptist Cemetery.
Friends may call on Wednesday morning one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions in Mrs. Loper’s memory be made to the Fortescue Chapel, New Jersey Avenue, Fortescue, NJ 08321.
