Edna V. Matthews of Port Norris, 102
years of age, died Friday evening, Nov. 11, 2005 in the Matre Dei
Nursing Center, Newfield. She had been in failing health for the past 7
months.
The wife of the late Francis E. Matthews, she was born in Calvert
County, Maryland and was the daughter of the late Somersett and Nannie
Hutchins. She had been a Port Norris resident for over 70 years, coming
from Maryland.
Edna was employed in domestic work in area homes for many years.
She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Calvert County
Maryland and the Shiloh Baptist Church of Port Norris.
Survivors include: a son, Firman Matthews, Woodbine; a daughter,
Corledia Broome, Millville; ten grandchildren; twelve great
grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in
death by two daughters, Lillian Chase and Estelle Smith; two sons,
Francis Matthews and Charles Matthews; two brothers, McKinley Hutchins
and Joseph Hutchins and four sisters, Lillian Hutchins, Blanche
Hutchins, Dorothy Hutchins and Helen Hutchins.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon, Nov. 18, at 1:00
O’clock, in the Shiloh Baptist Church, Memorial Avenue, Port Norris.
Burial will be in Haleyville Cemetery, Commercial Township. A viewing
will be held in the church on Friday afternoon between 12:00 and 1:00
O’clock. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the PADGETT
