Sister Gloria Martin, aged 77, of
Bridgeton, departed this life on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at 5:50 a.m.,
in the Cumberland Manor Nursing Center, where she had resided for the
past 15 months.
The wife of the late James Martin, she was born in Greenwich Township on
June 16, 1929 and was the daughter of the late Clarence Linwood and
Lillian Casper Pernell. She lived most of her life and received her
education in the Bridgeton area.
Gloria attended a Certified Nursing Assistant certification class, but
never worked in the capacity of a C.N.A. She was employed at the Riggins
& Robbins Oyster Co. of Port Norris.
Gloria accepted the Lord on Aug. 8, 2004, at St. Augustine A.M.E. Zion
Church under the leadership of Rev. Lawton Nelson. It was shortly after
accepting the Lord that her health began to progressively fail to the
point of not being able to attend services.
While in good health, Gloria was a loner and she would have it no other
way, but she loved her family. Some of her favorite pass times were
fishing, reading, crossword puzzles, watching television and playing
bingo.
She is survived by: one brother, Glendon Pernell, Vineland; one sister,
Rev. Dr. Evelyn Pernell- Smith, Bridgeton; three sisters-in-law, Anna
Mary Townsend, Rosenhayn, Catherine P. Robinson, Georgia and Fannie
Pernell, Philadelphia, Pa.; one godson, Matthew Pernell and a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
At Mrs. Martin’s request, funeral services will be private at the
convenience of the family, in the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, Upper Deerfield
Township. Burial will private in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Springtown.
There will be no public viewing. Written condolences may be sent to the
family via the funeral home website at www.padgettfuneralhome.com.
