Johnnie Russ Auger

Johnnie Russ Auger, age 70, of Somers Point, passed away on June 29, 2006 at his home where during a brief period of hospice care he received friends, neighbors, and family near the water he loved.

Born December 6, 1935, in Hallsborough, North Carolina, his family migrated to Pittsgrove, NJ prior to World War Two. He spent his boyhood in Pittsgrove and Bridgeton and attended Bridgeton High School. He served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1955 until 1959. John married the former Diane Marie Oertle of Bridgeton in 1963, bought a home in Bridgeton, and raised two daughters there. He provided for his family by working primarily as a new car and truck salesman in the Bridgeton area for more than 30 years.

Johnnie enjoyed time as a member of the Bridgeton Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, and was active as a member of the Bridgeton High School Class of 1954. An avid fisherman and boater, he kept a boat for much of his life. An accomplished dancer, he also spent Friday nights dancing with his wife Diane until she became ill. Raised protestant, he converted to Catholicism in 1997.

In 2002 he entered semi retirement, eventually settling at Bay Breeze Village in Egg Harbor Township. In retirement he continued with his boating and fishing, and went dancing twice weekly in Somers Point with friends. He lost his beloved wife Diane after a decade long illness in 2005. In early June 2006 after a succession of hospitalizations, he came home to spend his final days with the assistance of Compassionate Care Hospice.

Surviving are: two loving daughters, Kimberly Auger Fogle of Media Pa and Michelle Auger Dawson of Penndel PA; a granddaughter, Macy Brynn Dawson; two sisters, Maynell Capriotti of Vineland and Betty Marlette of Fairton, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
