Rev. Joseph W. Johnson, 82, of
Bridgeton, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, June 23, 2006. He
had been in failing health for 6 months and was a patient at the Bishop
McCarthy residence in Vineland.
The husband of the late Sarah V. Merritt Johnson, Rev. Johnson was born
in Bridgeton and was the son of the late James and Mary Williams
Johnson. He had been a lifetime resident of Bridgeton.
Retired for the past 21 years, he had been employed with Conrail & the
former Reading Seashore Line for 35 years. He had worked out of
Bridgeton, Millville, Glassboro and Philadelphia.
He was a member of the Church of God in Bridgeton and was a Veteran of
World War Two, serving with the U. S. Army in the Asiatic-Pacific
Theater.
Survivors include: seven sons, Milton W. Johnson, Woodbridge, Va.,
Carlton J. Johnson, Millville, Minister Glendon S. Johnson, Vineland,
Warren Johnson, Vineland, Thomas R. Johnson, Vineland, Rev. Lawrence O.
Johnson, Williamstown and Elder Lester L. Johnson, Vineland; three
daughters, Mildred S. Pryor, Camden, Juanita Sease, Fairfield Township
and Minister Mary B. Underwood, Vineland; two brothers, Milton E.
Johnson, Pedricktown and Ronald Johnson, Vineland; two sisters, Shirley
Ann Johnson, Fairfield Twp. and Cecelia M. Pierce, Bridgeton, his
mother-in-law, Belle Merritt, Bridgeton; 48 grandchildren, 68 great
grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death
by one son, Leonard W. Johnson; one daughter, Amelia Currington; five
brothers, Herman Johnson, Robert Johnson, George Johnson, Donald Johnson
and Frank Johnson; seven sisters, Rebecca Johnson, Margaret Childers,
Ellen Durham, Mary Browne, Linda Pierce, Hilda King and Eugunia Harris;
one grandson, one granddaughter and one great grandson.
Funeral services will be held in the Bridgeton Church of God, 81
Pamphylia Ave., Bridgeton, on Saturday morning, July 1, at 11:00
O’clock. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Hopewell Township.
A viewing will be held at the church on Saturday morning between 9:00
and 11:00 O’clock. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the
