John H. “Moose” Loper, 84, of Ogden,
Utah, formerly of Bridgeton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct.
11, 2006 in Utah.
He was born in Bridgeton and was the son of the late Samuel and Emmaline
Porch Loper. He had lived in Utah since 1957 and prior to that had been
a resident of Bridgeton.
Before his retirement in 1987, he had been employed at Williams
International Co., manufactures of cruise missiles, located in Ogden. He
had also been employed with the former Ferricute Machine Co. in
Bridgeton, the Bridgeton Police Dept. as a motorcycle policeman and the
Wheaton Glass Co .in Millville. John was a former Bridgeton City
Councilman, serving during the years of 1956 and 1957.
A veteran of World War Two, he had served in the U. S. Navy in the
Philippine Theater and in 2004 he was a recipient of the Cumberland
County Military Service Medal, presented by the State of New Jersey. He
was a member and past commander of Shoemaker Post 95, American Legion of
Bridgeton and the Bridgeton Loyal Order of Moose Lodge.
He was a graduate of Bridgeton High School, Class of 1942. He was a star
football and baseball player, two sports he lived for his entire life.
John married Virginia Sockwell Sept. 23, 1942. Although they later
divorced they remained friends.
Survivors include: one son, Edward Loper, Millville; one grandson, Randy
Loper, Millville; two stepdaughters, Diane Russell, Ogden, Utah and
Dixie Wightman, Beaver Creek, OH.; four step-grandchildren, Kimberly
Davis, Kelly Sheppard, Lee Sockwell and Debbie Jablonski; twelve great
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews in the Bridgeton area. He
was preceded in death by two sisters, Grace Burns and Mildred Kwasnicki
and his companion, Mary Dornbos.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning, Oct. 21st, at 11:00
a.m. at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield
Township. Burial will be in Laurel Lawn Cemetery, Upper Deerfield
Township. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Saturday morning
between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. Written condolences may be sent to the
