William McDermott, Jr., age 78, of
Bridgeton died surrounded by his family Sunday, September 24, 2006 at
the HospiceCare Unit of South Jersey Healthcare in Bridgeton where he
had been a patient for three days. He had been in declining health for
the past few months.
Husband of 53 years to Netta Mae
Gibbons McDermott, he was born in Bridgeton on July 25, 1928 to the late
William and May Williams McDermott.
Bill was a produce wholesaler by
trade and started his career working as a teen for his brother in law,
the late Robert D. Peacock, Sr. After a number of years he established M
& S Produce with the late Samuel Stites. As the business grew he and Sam
decided to go independent and Bill started McDermott & Sons Produce in
Bridgeton with his family which served the Cumberland County area for
many years. After his retirement from self employment he went to work
for IGA Supermarkets where he worked in Millville and Vineland and then
lastly in the Bridgeton store retiring at age 62.
His favorite pastimes included
crossword puzzles, watching game shows and playing pinochle.
He also enjoyed sports but most of
all enjoyed his home and being with family and friends.
In addition to his wife Netta, he is
survived by three sons, William McDermott, III and his wife Debra of
Hopewell Township, Michael McDermott and Kevin “Wolfie” McDermott both
of Bridgeton; a daughter, Sherry Earnest and her husband Gary of
Bridgeton; two daughters-in-law, Denise Smith McDermott of Stow Creek
Township and Anna Minco McDermott of Millville; two sisters, Hannah
Peacock of Bridgeton and Clara Sutton of Colorado and grandchildren
Jonah Smith, Gary Earnest, Jr., Brian Earnest, Patrick McDermott, II,
Miranda McDermott and Meagan McDermott along with many nieces, nephews
and close friends. He was predeceased by a son Patrick S. McDermott in
July of 2003 and three sisters, Elizabeth Fisher, Margaret McDermott and
Ruth Porter.
Funeral services will be held on
Thursday at 11 a.m. from the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway #
77, Upper Deerfield Township.
Burial will take place at Laurel Lawn
Cemetery in Upper Deerfield Township.
Friends may call on Wednesday evening
from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
