Donald Snowhite

Master Sergeant, United States Army, retired, Donald Snowhite, age 78, of Hopewell Township died Thursday, September 7, 2006 at his home succumbing to cancer after a two month period of declining health.

Born in Philadelphia on March 25, 1928, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Faye Myerson Snowhite and was the husband of Kathryn Dunfee-Catalano Snowhite. He had been a Hopewell Township resident for 6 years and prior to that had resided in Rosenhayn.

Mr. Snowhite initially joined the United States Marine Corps where he served four years. He then switched services joining the United States Army and served with the 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team during the Korean War. At the conclusion of the Korean War Don volunteered for Special Forces and served in Laos with a “White Star” Military Training Team. He also served in Vietnam with MACV-SOG, CCC. He was a member of the 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Okinawa 1962-1968. His awards and decorations included: Bronze Star Medal for Valor with Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He retired from the United States Army after serving 21 years. He was also retired from United States Civil Service and had formerly worked at Clement Papas Company in Upper Deerfield Township.

Don was a member of the Special Operations Association, Special Forces Association, 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team Association, American Legion Shoemaker Post 95, Bridgeton, a lifetime member of V.F.W. Meade-Woodward Post 1795, Bridgeton and the Bridgeton Eagles Airy and served as a trustee of the Bridgeton Elks Lodge.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a stepson, Richard Catalano, Jr. and his wife Georgette of Tuckerton; a brother, Morton Snowhite and his wife June of Basking Ridge; three sisters, Sheila Bicoff of Anondale, VA, Bernice Godfrey of Huntington Valley, PA and Gladys Sykes and her husband Ed of Bridgeton; three step-grandchildren, Christopher, Cody and Kyle Catalano and several nieces and nephews including Mindy and Dennis Calcagnini of Cedarville.

Cremation and inurnment took place at Laurel Lawn Crematory in Upper Deerfield Township.

Graveside memorial services will be held at the Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Trench Road, Hopewell Township on Thursday morning, September 14th at 11 a.m. Semper Fi.

Arrangements are under the direction of the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, Upper Deerfield Township.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions in Mr. Snowhite’s memory be made to the Cumberland County SPCA, 1244 North Delsea Drive, Vineland, NJ 08360 for the love of his pets Scooter, Smokey, Chloe and Jingles.
