Charles L. Smith, 69, of Upper
Deerfield Township, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2007, in South Jersey
Hospital-Elmer Division, after a short illness.
The husband of Vivian V. Schmidt Smith, he was born in Grassy Fork,
Tenn., and was the son of the late Floyd Smith and Flora Williams Smith.
He had been an Upper Deerfield Township resident for most of his life.
Prior to his retirement in 2003, he had formerly been employed with
Safeways Freezers in Vineland for 20 years and prior to that with
Cumberland Cold Storage at Seabrook Farms for 25 years.
Charles loved cooking, blue grass music, camping and gardening. He was
an avid hunter, fisherman and had formerly been a member of the Seabrook
Hunting Club.
Besides his wife, survivors include: three daughters, Denise E.
McDermott, Stow Creek Township, Karen V. Gould, Millville and Kristine
L. Smith, Bridgeton; two sons, Dennis C. Smith and his wife Janet B.,
Mays Landing and Steven L. Smith and his wife Janet W., Upper Deerfield
Township; three sisters, Judy West, Pittsgrove, Pat DeJohn, Pittsgrove
and Peggy Godfrey, Upper Deerfield Township; two brothers, Eugene Smith,
Upper Deerfield Township and Leslie Smith, Hopewell Township; one
granddaughter, Sarah E. Smith and seven grandsons, Patrick McDermott,
Jared Smith, Johnathan Smith, Tony Thomas, Christopher Thomas, Cole
Smith and Austin Smith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond
Smith.
Funeral services will be held in the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State
Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township, on Tuesday, Aug. 14, at 12:00
O’clock noon. Burial will be in Laurel Lawn Cemetery, Upper Deerfield
Township. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday morning
between 10:00 and 12:00 O’clock. Written condolences may be sent to the
