Joseph L. Nardelli

Prominent local businessman and lifetime Cedarville resident, Joseph L. Nardelli, Jr., age 80, died Thursday, December 27, 2007 at his home of prostrate cancer. He had driven for the past seven years to the University Of Pennsylvania Hospital for treatment and then had chemotherapy locally this past spring. His health deteriorated from that point.

Joe was born in Cedarville and graduated from the Oak Leaf Elementary School and Bridgeton High School with the Class of 1945. He attended the Philadelphia Electronic Institute with a friend, Adam Lloyd in the evenings.

An avid golfer for 60 years he had many close friends. Some of his foursomes included Bill Shropshire, Harker Bitters, Frankie Carmen, Ed Horseman, Frank Oertle and his cousin former Cumberland County Clerk John Nardelli.

When his father died suddenly in 1946, Mr. Nardelli then 18 and his sister Julia, then 16 took over the family farm supply business later tearing down the 170 year old structure and constructing a new hardware store. Well known as Nardelli Hardware throughout the area the business was sold in 1990. He worked in his father’s business and also at the family farm from a young age.

On one occasion Mr. Nardelli, Sr. sent him to Philadelphia driving a fuel truck at the age of 17 to have a new tank installed on the rig. Later upon his return he said he was “scared stiff” by the experience. He also drove at the age of 11, when as he sat in his mother’s car and felt it needed to be moved he drove it a few feet. His mother saw the car moving along, apparently with no driver.

He was a member of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Cedarville and the Cohanzick Country Club.

Joe is survived by his sisters Barbara Dacy of Millville and Julia Marsella of Cedarville, one aunt, many cousins and a special friend, Betty Turner. He was predeceased by his nephew John Dacy, Jr. and his parents, Marion Sanza Nardelli and Joseph L. Nardelli.

His Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 367 Main Street, Cedarville on Thursday, January 3rd at 11 a.m.

Burial will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Millville.
