Roy “Lester” Carter, 92, of Maple
Shade, died Monday, Feb. 19, 2007, in the New Jersey Veterans Home,
Vineland. He had been in failing health for the past 2 years.
The husband of Elfriede Bleich Carter, He was born in Thaxton, Va. and
was the son of the late James Albert Carter and Annie Burl Orange
Carter. He had been a resident of Maple Shade since 1985 and prior to
that had resided in Mt. Holly and Georgia.
Lester was a career officer in the military, serving with the U. S. Army
in Germany during World War II. He retired from the service in 1961. He
had also been employed with the Pinkerton Security Agency in Atlanta,
Ga. In his early years Lester had worked in the Civilian Conservation
Corps. in the 1930’s.
He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart in Virginia.
Besides his wife, survivors include: a step-son, Heinz Bleich, Germany;
two brothers, Luther Carter, Carney’s Point and Carlton Carter, Madison,
Wisc.; a sister Emma Clifford, Elmer; three step-grandchildren and a
number of step-great grandchildren, all in Germany and several nieces
and nephews. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Margaret Danna,
Nelia McKinney, Leona Fullerton and Mamie Rebe and three brothers,
Herman Carter, Milton Carter and Willie Carter.
Funeral services will be held in the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State
Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township, on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 24, at
1:00 O’clock. Burial will be in Fernwood Memorial Park, Hopewell
Township. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Saturday
afternoon between 12:00 and 1:00 O’clock.
