Alonzo Brown, Sr., aged 84, of
Newport, died in the South Jersey Regional Medical Center on Saturday,
June 2, 2007, where he had been a patient for the past week. He had been
in failing health for the last 5 years.
The husband of Elder Thelma Slater Brown, he was born in St. George, S.
C. and was the son of the late Charlie and Martha Brown. He had been a
Newport resident for the past 27 years and prior to that had lived in
Cedarville.
Prior to his retirement Alonzo had been employed in the construction
trade with Union Local 415 of Atlantic City.
Besides his wife, survivors include: four sons, Pastor Curtis Johnson,
New Castle, Del., James Brown, Biloxi, Miss., Jerry Brown, Ottawa, Ont.,
Canada and Alonzo Brown, Jr., Newport; on daughter, Arlene Pierce,
Camden; one brother, Eddie Brown, Brooklyn, N. Y.; one sister, Hazel
Brown, Georgia; twenty three grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Saunders; a son, Sydney
Johnson; four brothers; two sisters and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held in the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State
Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township, on Wednesday afternoon, June 6, at
1:00 O’clock. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Memorial Park, Hopewell
Township. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday
afternoon between 12:00 and 1:00 O’clock. Written condolences may be
