Rose Marie Mooney

Rose Marie Mooney, age 87, of Lawrence Township died Thursday afternoon, March 15, 2007 at her home.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, on July 29, 1919 she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Gerard and Elizabeth Ann Browne Gerard and the wife of the late Myron H. Mooney who died in 1993.

Rose’s parents met during World War One while her father was serving with the United States Navy. They were married in England at her mother’s home in the country. Rose was their first child.

At the age of six Rose traveled to England with her mother and two siblings to visit with family for about a year. While there they also visited Scotland, Whales and France. She had many fond memories of that time.

Upon their return to the United States, they moved to Paulsboro where her father purchased a new home for his family.

Rose’s early years were happy and prosperous until her father lost his life at sea off the coast of Florida in 1930. The loss of her father and the vagaries of the Great Depression forced Rose to accept the responsibilities of an adult at a very tender age. She took jobs as a sales girl in a general store, sewing machine operator in a clothing company, laboratory assistant at an oil company quality control lab and doing waitress work in a small restaurant.

In her teens she fell in love with Myron, the man who would be her husband of more than 50 years. They had two children before World War Two. Then Myron served for four years with the United States Army.

In 1947 they bought their home in Lawrence Township outside of Cedarville and added six more children to their family.

During the 1970s and 1980s Rose served as the Welfare Director for Lawrence Township where she assisted many who were experiencing hard times.

Throughout her life Rose had a pleasant disposition and a ready smile for everyone.
