Woodrow W. Halter

Woodrow W. Halter, age 91, of Hopewell Township and formerly of Upper Deerfield died Saturday morning, September 15, 2007 at Cumberland Manor.

Born in Cohansey, the son of the late Wallace and Mary Ernest Halter he was the husband of the late Dorothy Gilds Halter. He had been Hopewell Township resident for four years and prior to that was a longtime Upper Deerfield Township resident.

Before his retirement in 1985 he had been employed as a farmer with Seabrook Farms and prior to that was a nurseryman with Koster Nursery and Brock Nursery all in Upper Deerfield.

A member of the Elmer United Methodist Church, he had given 46 years of faithful service as a loyal Trustee and Head Usher. He was a founding member of the Tri County Deer Club and a member of Elmer Lodge # 160 F & A M. The oldest member of Boy Scouts of America Troop # 39, Southern New Jersey Council, Old Colony District, Elmer, he had served as a member of the Troop Committee.

Mr. Halter had served many years with loyalty and dedication to the Seabrook Volunteer Fire Company with two terms as president and two years as assistant chief. For this he received an Appreciation Award for Seabrook Fire and Rescue, an Outstanding Service and Contribution Award and Resolutions from Upper Deerfield Township honoring that service. He was also well known to the residents and businesses in the Township for his active role in selling tickets door to door for the former sub sales that were held by the company.

As a charter member in 1957 of the Upper Deerfield Ambulance Association, Mr. Halter was made a Life Member in 1972. He served as president from 1968 to 1970 and was an executive chairman for various committees. Here he also received an Outstanding Service Award. He was on the top ten responders list for 32 years.

He is survived by three sons, Kenneth W. Halter and his wife Ruth of Davenport, FL, Carl W. Halter and his wife Pamela of Hopewell Township and Robert S. Halter and his wife Nina of Hackensac; a daughter, Janet H. Christy of Hopewell, 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by 18 brothers and sisters, one granddaughter and his son in law, Daniel Christy.

Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway # 77, Upper Deerfield Township on Thursday, September 20th at 11 a.m.

Burial will take place at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Elmer.

Friends may call on Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.

The family asks that contributions in Mr. Halter’s memory be made either to the Seabrook Volunteer Fire Company # 2 or to HospiceCare of South Jersey.
