George B. "G.B." Smith

George B. “G.B.” Smith, 86, of Upper Deerfield Township, died in Carney’s Point, at the home of his daughter Peggy, on Tuesday morning, April 15, 2008. He had been in failing health for the past year.

The husband of Mary M. Seeney Smith, he was born in Bybee, Tenn., and was the son of the late Eldy Smith and Lola Neace Smith. He had been a resident of Upper Deerfield Township since 1940 and prior to that had lived in Shiloh.

Prior to his retirement in 1987, he had been employed with the Mannington Mills Company in Salem County for 42 years.

G.B. was a longtime member of Friendship Finley United Methodist Church and the Rosenhayn Deer Club.

He was a veteran of World War Two, serving with the United States Navy in the European Theater.

Besides his wife, survivors include: two daughters, Peggy Sutton, Carney’s Point and Betty Williams, Gold Bar, Washington.; one son, Gregory Smith, Pittsgrove Township; a brother, Von Smith, Bybee, Tennessee.; three sisters, Mervine Fabris, Ohio, Willie Jean Holt, Bybee, Tenn and Idella Johnson , New Tazwell, Tennessee.; six grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Ann Hoyate.

Funeral services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway 77, Upper Deerfield Township, on Friday morning, April 18th, at 11:00 a.m.

Burial will take place at Laurel Lawn Cemetery, Upper Deerfield Township.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday morning between 10 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. prior to the funeral services.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions in Mr. Smith’s memory be made to South Jersey HospiceCare, P.O. Box 160, Bridgeton, NJ 08302.
