Frank Cortelyou, Jr.

Frank Cortelyou, Jr. age 81, of Fairfield Township died Monday, January 21, 2008 at South Jersey Regional Medical Center where he had been a patient for one week. He had been in declining health for the past four months.

Born in Bridgeton he was the son of the late Frank Cortelyou and Louise Minton
Cortelyou and was the husband of Elaine Henderson Cortelyou. He had been a Fairfield
Township resident for 45 years and prior to that had resided in Bridgeton.

A graduate of the Bridgeton High School Class of 1944 he went on to graduate from Mercersburg Academy and Princeton University. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Bridgeton.

Frank was actively involved with agriculture all of his life. He worked with the Ritter Seed Company for 20 years and served on the New Jersey Asparagus Council. In the mid 1970’s he and his family went into business growing greenhouse tomatoes and flowers. During the summers he worked for Hunt Wesson’s tomato operations and when the Hunt’s Bridgeton plant closed he went to Toledo, Ohio to do agricultural research for the company.

He retired to his family home on the Cohansey River in 1991 where he enjoyed working in his garden and woods. He also enjoyed traveling, attending the theater, reading and listening to books and especially sharing time with his three grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and closest companion, Elaine, with whom he celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in October, he is survived by his daughter Jan Lee and her husband David and their sons Seth and Matthew who reside in Raleigh, North Carolina. Also his daughter Patricia Hamilton and her husband John and their daughter Jacqueline who reside in Atlanta, Georgia.

Memorial Services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 160 Main Street, Cedarville and will be announced at a later date.

Cremation and inurnment will take place at Laurel Lawn Crematory in Upper Deerfield Township.

The family asks that contributions in Frank’s memory be made to the charity of one’s choice.
