Howard F. “Dutch” Cole, 86, of
Fairton, died in the Jefferson Neuro Science Hospital, Philadelphia,
Pa., on Friday, June 27, 2008, after suffering a stroke one week ago.
The husband of Blanche Walinsky Cole, he was born in Fairton and was the
son of the late Robert M. Cole, Sr. and Sarah Jane Vineyard Cole. He had
been a lifetime resident of Fairton. He and his wife Blanche had
celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this past January.
Howard and his brother Robert, Jr. had operated Cole Brothers General
Store in Fairton for many years after buying the store from their
father. He was also well known for trapping muskrats, which he had been
doing since he was five years old. He was also a licensed auctioneer and
appraiser.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U. S. Marine Core in
the South Pacific Theater. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and was an avid gardener. Howard and his wife Blanche were
members of several orchid societies and had raised orchids for many
years. He was a member of and former office holder in the Fairfield
Presbyterian Church.
Besides his wife, survivors include: one daughter, Patricia Ann Cole
Friedman of Hawaii; six grandchildren, Brendon Friedman, Hawaii, Lisa
Friedman-Chavez, Miami, Fla., Nanea Friedman, Hawaii, Tobias Cole,
California, Jacob Cole Pittsgrove and Benjamin Cole, Pittsgrove; seven
loving great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was
preceded in death by a son, Robin A. Cole and two brothers, George Cole
and Robert Cole, Jr.
The family will announce funeral arrangements at a later date. Funeral
