William J. Gehring, age 90, of
Cedarville died Monday evening, March 10, 2008 at the New Jersey
Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland following a period of declining
health.
Born in Downer, he was the son of the
late Joseph Gehring and Bertha Flexon Gehring and was the husband of
Jean Starkey Gehring. He had been a resident of Cedarville for the past
60 years and had lived in Bridgeton prior to that.
Mr. Gehring retired in 1978 from the
Kerr Glass Company in Millville and had also been employed with the
Seibel & Stern Clothing Company in Bridgeton for 25 years.
A veteran of World War Two he served
with the United States Army in the European Theater.
He was a member of the Cedarville United Methodist Church where he had
served on the Board of Trustees and was an exempt member of the
Cedarville Fire Department. A knowledgeable local historian, he wrote “A
History of Cedarville” and “A History of Cedar Creek” and was
instrumental in the founding of the Lawrence Township Historical Society
where he served as an active member. His other interests included
photography, stamps, coins and flowers.
In addition to his wife, Jean, he is
survived by two daughters, Marilyn Tharp and her husband Alfred “Bucky”
Tharp of Stow Creek Township and Beth Mills and her husband William of
Olean, NY; two sisters, Irma Miller of Stow Creek Township and Emma
Comiski of Bridgeton; five grandchildren, Wendy Tharp and Joshua,
Jessica, Laura and Shaun Mills. He was predeceased by three sisters,
Ruth Gibe, Dorothy Bennett and Elnora Barker.
Funeral services will be held at the
PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 160 Main Street, Cedarville on Saturday, March
15th at 11 a.m.
Burial will take place at Cedar Hill
Cemetery in Cedarville.
Friends may call on Friday evening
from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
