Louis P. Woolbert

Louis P. Woolbert, age 73, of Upper Deerfield Township, died Sunday morning, January 25, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia after suffering a heart attack on January 22nd.

A resident of Upper Deerfield Township most of his life, he was born in Bridgeton, the son of the late Walter Woolbert and Armanda Gale Woolbert and was the husband of the late Dorothy Gross Woolbert.

He was a veteran having served with the United States Navy and had been employed with the NJ Division of Motor Vehicles in Upper Deerfield Township and Salem prior to his retirement. He had also previously worked at Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Bridgeton and had his own carpet installation business.

Lou was always known as a strong, healthy man-a pillar of physical and emotional strength. It was not uncommon for him to throw a large roll of carpet or tree that fell in his yard over his shoulder and to then ask “What are you waiting for?” For over ten years he battled with multiple myeloma with so much strength, determination and willpower that he did not appear ill. Two years ago, following battling with several major surgeries he was determined to walk down the aisle without assistance at his granddaughter Jessica’s wedding. He then met the same challenges again last year and proudly escorted his daughter Kathi as she married Rob.

No challenges were too big for Lou. Boating, fishing, football games and house projects kept him going. His recent heart attack was another battle that his family knew he could have won, but it was time for him to go join with his late wife Dot in eternity. Following her passing in November of 2007, Lou found the “Golden Years” not to be so golden. It was common for Dot to convince Lou to take her for “a ride” to Atlantic City to enjoy playing various games of chance. His family was always entertained by hearing the two different sides of the same story of who had won and lost.

After his retirement from the Division of Motor Vehicles where he tested new drivers, he tried filling his longer days by becoming more involved with his children, grandchildren and family. He became more active with them by attending high school theatricals and West Virginia University sporting events.

He gave unselfishly to his family for 73 years and now it was time for them to give back to him. He will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family.

Surviving are a son, David Woolbert and his wife Crystal of Daretown; a daughter, Kathi Atha and her husband Robert of Upper Deerfield Township; three grandchildren, Ryan Woolbert of Daretown, Jessica Woolbert Botto and her husband Anthony of Deptford and Sarah Warren of Upper Deerfield Township; a brother in law Richard Gross and his wife Fay of Atlanta, GA and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Melva Woolbert Kline and Trink Arlene Felmey.

Memorial services will be held at the PADGETT FUNERAL HOME, 1107 State Highway # 77, Upper Deerfield Township on Tuesday evening, January 27th at 6 p.m.
