Caleb Joseph McGlohon II transitioned to his heavenly home, February 24, 2024. He was born March 13, 1927, in Pitt County, where his family was tobacco farmers for many decades. In 1936, due to the Great Depression, his family became one of the original settlers on the Penderlea Homestead Project. He liked to tell about the day he shook hands with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, when she visited Penderlea. This made a great impression on a nine-year-old boy.
Joe is predeceased by his parents Joseph Marvin and Juanita Smith McGlohon, his precious wife of 66 years, Betty Piner McGlohon; sister Edna Earle McGlohon Moore (Robert), and brother Neil Allen McGlohon. He has two daughters, June McGlohon Robbins (Red) and Joette McGlohon. His two granddaughters are Abby Lee Robbins and Molly Jo McGlohon. Joe always said he had two special daughters, Mary Ann Blanton and Linda Gurganious and a special son, Harry Teachey. He had many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he enjoyed visiting.
Joe was a WW II Veteran, who served in the European theater. When he returned home, he worked several jobs until he found his career as a Rural Letter Carrier. He served for 31 years, holding offices in the NC Rural Letter Carriers Association. He loved his patrons and remained fast friends with many of them after retirement. He was a member of the Willarlea Ruritan Club for over 50 years, where he was active in helping people in his community. Joe also checked the weather for the NOAA National Weather Service for 20 years. This information helped determine weather patterns all over the United States.
Joe worked diligently in the church, holding many positions. He truly loved teaching his Sunday School Class. He believed a Christian life is seen through actions and deeds and in order to do this, one had to have that personal relationship with Christ. Using his faiths, he strived to make his spot in the world a better place.
Lower Cape Fear Life Care was truly an inspiration to Joe and his family. For that they are so grateful. A thank you to Jesse Ennis, from Pender Adult Services. She brought love and humor into the McGlohon family.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the Penderlea Community Building on Eleanor Roosevelt Lane, beside Penderlea Elementary School. The visitation time will be from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2024. Funeral services will be March 2, 2024, at Potts Presbyterian Church at 1:00pm.
In leu of flowers, the McGlohon family would like people to donate to the Willarlea Ruritan Club at 104 N Cowan St, Burgaw NC 28425 or to Potts Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund at 2453 Crooked Run Rd, Willard, NC 28478.
