Carey Maurice James of Harrells, NC left his earthly life on the early morning of April 10, 2019 while a resident of Lower Cape Fear Hospice LifeCare Center in Wilmington, NC.  Born on June 13, 1943, he was the son of the late Maurice Aticus and Sarah Margaret Evans James.  Also predeceasing him in 2018 was his wife of fifty-four years, Iris Laylon Peterson James.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his daughters--Debora J. West and husband Paul of Harrells & Pamela J. McLean and husband Steve of Wilmington; grandchildren--Danielle J. West and fiancee' Michael Lapinska, Erica A. West, Jonathan C. McLean, Kristin N. McLean; sister--Carolyn J. Jarrell and husband Rudy of Wilmington; brother--Johnnie James and wife Shirley of Surf City; sisters-in-law--Maxine Thomas and husband Donald of Harrells & Linda Peterson of Harrells.  He also leaves behind his very good friend, Ricky Simpson and wife Gloria.

Mr. James served the Wilmington Police Department for thirty years in many capacities including motorcycle patrol, detective, and boating operations--retiring as a sergeant.  He enjoyed fishing and hunting bear, deer and wild turkey.  He enjoyed watching football, basketball, and NASCAR on television and was a devoted fan of the Wallace Rose Hill "Bulldogs".  Family was the center of his life and he and Iris were almost inseparable after retirement--"when you saw one, you saw the other".  The grandchildren were the light of his life.

Family will greet friends on Friday, April 12, 2019 from 6:00 til 8:00 pm at the 401 West Main Street chapel of Padgett Funeral & Cremation Services in Wallace, NC.  Graveside services will be conducted by Reverend Jimmy Johnson on Saturday, April 13, 2019 at 11:00 am at the Rockfish Memorial Mausoleum in Wallace.  Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made in Carey's memory to Lower Cape Fear Hospice LifeCare Center in Wilmington, NC.
