Mrs. Carrie "Carmela" Mary Schembri, age 95 of Wallace, NC, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the Brian Center Health and Rehab Center in Wallace.

Born September 17, 1916 in Zabbar, Malta, Mrs. Schembri was the daughter of the late Joseph and Katherine (Cassar) Butigieg and was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Stephano Schembri, a brother Father Tarsicius "Tex" Butigieg, sisters, Anna Gusman, Rita Piscopo and Jesse Butigieg and a daughter-in-law Jean Schembri.

She and her husband proudly became US citizens, she on Sept 1, 1943 and he on March 20, 1941. During her lifetime she worked as store clerk, made thermometers, worked in the kitchen of BOCES and volunteered for the pre K program. She completed 8th grade and 2 years of trade school. Carrie enjoyed crocheting and working in the yard. She loved to travel and had visited on several occasions her birth place in Malta. She enjoyed taking care of her cats and family dogs and cherished spending time with her family and friends. Carrie always stayed busy cleaning, straightening up and puttering around the house and yard. She enjoyed the nights when she could go out to dinner with the ones she loved. One of her greatest loves was her church and always attended mass when she could.

She is survived by a brother, Ditto Butigieg of Long Island, NY, a sister Kitty Farrugia of Catskill, NY three sons Stephen Schembri and Gail of Hudson, Fl, Richard Schembri and Liz of PA, Denis Schembri and Linda of Wallace, NC, nine grandchildren, Stephanie Canterino and Christopher of Kings Park, NY; Thomas Schembri and Beverly of Eufala, Al; Michael Schembri and Bambi of Port Richey, Fl, Robert Schembri and Lisa of Port Richey, NY; Cathy Michaels and Christian of Kings Park, NY Lisa Schembri and James Donovan O'Connell or Cork, Ireland, Rachel Ball and Nick of Ormond Beach, Fl and Erich Schembri and mother Ellen of Ormond Beach Fl, and JR Schembri and mother Linda of Boca Raton, Fl twelve great grandchildren, Christina and Michael Canterino, Beverly-Claire and Madeleine Schembri, Brooke Schembri, Kiyoshi and Alexander Schembri, Christian and Sophia Michaels, Jeanna, Bren and Gage Ball.
