Mr. Charles V. Brooks, III, age 89 of Wallace, N.C., passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 12, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Wallace conducted by Dr. Alan Thompson. Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Padgett Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Rockfish Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors.
Born in Teachey, N.C., on October 17, 1923, he was the son of the late Charles Vance, Jr. and Theresa Elizabeth McMillan Brooks. Mr. Brooks graduated from Clement High School, Wallace and continued his education at Mars Hill College and later at North Carolina State College where he received his bachelor's degree in engineering and became a Professional Land Surveyor. Before retiring his registration only a few years ago, Mr. Brooks was the third longest serving active land surveyor in the state. Charles was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Wallace where he was a Deacon Emeritus, Sunday School superintendent and teacher, Constitution Committee member, Building Committee member, and was involved in many other aspects of his church life. Mr. Brooks became an Eagle Scout in 1940 and later was the Scoutmaster for Troop 35 of Wallace from 1965 to 1974. Charles served honorably in the United States Navy during WWII earning the rank of Signalman Third Class (V6). During his time in the Navy, Charles earned the American Area Medal, the Victory World War II Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Medal. He married Doris Carolyn Blanchard in 1950. He worked for DuPont several years before opening his own business in Wallace. Mr. Brooks enjoyed woodworking, gardening, his church and spending time with his family and friends. Surviving besides his wife of 62 years, Doris Blanchard Brooks of the home is a son Vance Brooks and wife Cindy of Wilmington, N.C.; a daughter, Theresa B. Elias and husband Anthony of Wallace, N.C.; five grandchildren, John Brooks and wife Suzanne of Portland, OR.; Devon Register and husband Charlie of Teachey, N.C.; Jennifer Minter and husband Eric of Watha, N.C.; Charles Elias and fiancée Angie Wang both of Wilmington, N.C.; and Carolyn Elias of Greenville, N.C.; two great grandchildren, Bynum Brooks of Portland, OR.; and Skylar Register of Teachey, N.C.
Casket Bearers are Charles Elias, John Brooks, Eric Minter, Davis Carr, James Powell, and Jay Herring.
