Obituary

Donald Caldwell Bowman, 84, of Wallace, NC, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on January 14, 2010. Don was born February 23, 1925, in Guildford County to the late Lawrence Lee Bowman and Callie Clapp Bowman. He was married to the love of his life, Mary Avalee Bowman, for 65 years. As a member of the 22nd Infantry Regiment of the famed 42nd (Rainbow) Division of the U.S. Army, Don served as a combat medic in Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe during World War II. He received two bronze stars for heroism on the battlefield. In 1963, Don and Avalee moved from Graham to Wallace, North Carolina. He was owner and auctioneer of Wells Livestock Market. He was also an active member of the Wallace Presbyterian Church, having served as deacon, elder, trustee, and choir member. Don is survived by his wife, Avalee, and three children: Donna Bowman Powell (David) of Advance, NC, Edward Neal Bowman (Sylvia) of Wallace, NC, and Gary Lynn Bowman (Susan) of Oxford, NC. He was also very proud of and loved his seven grandchildren: Ryan Scott Powell (Amy), Kristen Powell Blakley (James), Austin Todd Powell, Caroline Bowman Goffena (Derik), Leslie Bowman Lowe (Eric), Anna Blake Bowman Watkins (Britt), and Michael Caldwell Bowman. He also cherished his very special great-grandchildren: Laney Isabelle Goffena, Owen Parker Blakley, McKenzie Grey Powell, and Levi Davis Goffena. His brother, Howard Lee Bowman (Myrtle), resides in Liberty, NC.
