Obituary

Mrs. Eloise Hearn Thorp, age 89, of Henrico, VA, formerly of Willard, NC and Arlington, VA and originally from Teachey, passed away on August 16, 2013 in Henrico, VA. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Teachey Presbyterian Church in Teachey, NC conducted by Dr. Philip K. Gladden. Burial will follow at Rockfish Memorial Cemetery in Wallace. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Charles Hildreth Hearn and Mrs. Edna McMillian Hearn of Teachey, NC; husband, James Odell Thorp, Sr. originally from Garland, NC and later Arlington, VA; granddaughter, Natalie Autry Brindle of Henrico, VA; three brothers, Walden Hearn of Elizabeth City, NC, Craig Hearn (Korean Conflict) and Charles Hearn, Jr. (Child); sisters, Edna Hearn Cascioli of Grifton, NC, Hilda Hearn Kelly of East Rochester, NY, Neta Hearn Pistner of Teachey, NC and Madeline Hearn Jarman of Teachey, NC. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Ronnie Woods of Henrico, VA and her son Jim Thorp and fiancé Mary Jo King of Radcliff, KY; her grandchildren, Paula Furr of Thurmont, MD, Alexandra Thorp of Randleman, NC and Sarah Woods Wilson and husband Michael of Mechanicsville, VA; great grandchildren, Tyler Watt, Hailey Watt, Sydney Furr, Lucas Gibson and Camden Wilson. Also surviving are her sisters, Miriam Tucker of Teachey, NC and Ruth Eakins and husband Horace of Willard, NC, and sister-in-law, Lillie Gray Hearn of Elizabeth City, NC and a great many wonderful nieces and nephews. Eloise also leaves her childhood friends she grew up and went to school with in Teachey and Wallace, NC as well as many friends in Arlington, VA, where she lived and worked for 50 years prior to moving back to be near her sisters in Teachey and Willard, NC. Eloise retired after 35 years of civilian service from the Navy Department, Submarine Service, working at the Pentagon and the Navy annex in Arlington. She was a member of the D.A.R. (Daughters of the American Revolution) both in Arlington and in Wallace (Rockfish Chapter). While in Arlington, she was a member of the women's chapter of the V.F.W. serving as an officer and also a member of the Dale City, VA. Moose Lodge again serving as an officer. She was a member of the Arlington Presbyterian Church. Having spent her childhood at the Teachey Presbyterian Church she returned there when she moved back to NC. She was a great reader and never without a book in her hand or pocketbook. Also, she loved to crochet and quilt. She always joined in with her sisters on trips to Florida, the mountains and Topsail Island just to get away so they could be together. They were not just sisters, they were great friends. Memorials may be made to Teachey Presbyterian Church P. O. Box 6, Teachey, NC 28464 in Eloise's memory. The family will be receiving family and friends prior to services at the McMillian Victorian Inn in Teachey, NC.
