Iris Laylon James of Harrells, North Carolina passed from her earthly life late Sunday night, July 15, 2018 while a resident of North Chase Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Wilmington, North Carolina. She was born in Duplin County on July 1, 1944 to the late Lewis Bryant and Sallie Belle Carter Peterson. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Billy Leighton Peterson. She leaves behind her husband of fifty-four years—Carey Maurice James; two daughters—Debora West and husband Paul of Harrells and Pamela McLean and husband Steve of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren—Danielle West and Erica West of Harrells, Jonathan McLean and Kristin McLean of Wilmington, NC; sister—Maxine Thomas and husband Donald of Harrells; sister-in-law Linda Peterson of Harrells. Mrs. James made many life-long friends before retiring from the New Hanover County school system as a school bus coordinator for the northern division of county schools. She enjoyed people in all walks of life as was evident in her ability to communicate with anyone she encountered in her daily life. Her family was very important to her as was exhibited by the love she shared with them, especially the grandchildren. Iris and Carey shared a common interest in their love for gospel music and attended many gospel music concerts. The two of them were together most of their waking hours after their retirements. An entombment service to honor her life will be held at the Rockfish Memorial Mausoleum on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held on Tuesday night, July 17th, at 6:00 pm til 8:00 pm in the chapel of Padgett Funeral & Cremation Services in Wallace.
