Obituary

Mr. Joseph Daniel \"JD\" Teachey, Jr. of Wallace, NC, passed away Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Carolina East/Quinn Hospice Care Center in Kenansville, NC. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 pm Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Wallace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Dr. Bob Kretzu and Rev. Jim Bailey. Burial will follow at Rockfish Memorial Cemetery, Wallace. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 6:00 pm Saturday at the Teachey residence on Hwy 117 in Wallace and at other times. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Jo Robinson and husband Steve of Wallace, NC, Karen Levings and husband John of Wallace, NC and Gayle Atkinson and husband Willie of Currie, NC, seven grandchildren, Melissa Atkinson, Joseph Atkinson, Danielle Robinson, Lauren Levings, Mary Katherine Robinson, Jonathan Atkinson and Cory Levings, a sister, Dr. Marguerite Burns of Atlanta, GA and several nieces and nephews. Born April 2, 1930 in Rocky Mount, NC, Mr. Teachey was the son of the late Joseph Daniel Teachey Sr. and Marguerite Greer Teachey. JD was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Mary Ann Fussell Teachey. JD has spent his entire life in Wallace with the exception of a couple of years at NC State and his time in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. With the help of Joseph H. Bryant, JD was able to establish his own produce company which has been in operation since 1955. In addition to his produce, JD has grown and sold many sweet potatoes and blueberries under the labels of \"JD's Best\" and \"Mary Jo's Fancy\". JD has been afforded the opportunity to serve his State as a member of the NC Department of Transportation, the NC Banking commission, and the Chairperson of the Agricultural Financing Commission. Appointed by Governor Jim Martin to the Electoral College, JD is one of only a few Duplin county natives to actually cast a vote in a Presidential election. As the dynamics of the Wallace community have changed over time, JD has actively participated in the Wallace Revitalization Committee. JD is also a member of the Wallace United Methodist Church where he has sung in the choir for over 50 years. He has also served as the Grand Marshall of the Wallace Christmas Parade. Mr. Teachey was also a recipient of the Harry \"Toots\" Carlton Award and was a founding member of the River Landing Country Club. Some of his other hobbies and interests were flying his plane, golfing, bird hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. Casketbearers will be Henry Campbell, Archie Carter, Jimmy Dunn, Brant Waters, Leon Sikes and Charlie Farrior. Honorary casketbearers are Robert Matthews, Delmar Minchew, Dr. Jack Robinson, Thomas Edgerton, Thomas Townsend, Francis Townsend, Knott Teachey, and Jimmy Robinson.
