Judge Harvey J. Boney, Jr. (Retired), age 97, died at Liberty Commons on April 18, 2012. Judge Boney was born December 3, 1914 in Rose Hill, North Carolina. He attended Christ Episcopal High School in Asheville, NC. He then earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In his early legal career, he was associated with John Drew Warlick Sr. in the practice of law. In 1942, he became a judge for the Onslow County Criminal Court, a position he held for 26 years. In 1968, when the General Court of Justice was created by the NC Legislature, Judge Boney ran for and was elected a district court judge of the 4th Judicial District which is composed of Sampson, Duplin, Jones and Onslow Counties. Judge Boney was appointed Chief District Court Judge and served in that capacity until 1977 when he retired. He was a master bridge player, a master joke teller and an iconic figure in Jacksonville and Onslow County with his hat always worn at a jaunty angle. He was a member of the Jacksonville USO since its inception. He has held office in the Jacksonville Kiwanis Club, the American Red Cross, Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce and Trinity United Methodist Church. He was honored in 1982 by the Jacksonville Jaycettes as one of the Five Outstanding Senior Citizens of North Carolina. In 1991, he was honored as a 50 year lawyer by the NC State Bar. In 2006, he was honored by the North Carolina Senate and the Onslow Community Appreciation Committee for his contributions and unselfish service as one of the significant leaders of Onslow County. Judge Boney was preceded in death by his parents Harvey J. and Inez C. Boney of Rose Hill, NC; sister Eunice Boney Hamrick and husband Fred D. Hamrick, Jr. of Rutherfordton, NC; nephew Dr. Fred D. Hamrick, III and wife Carolyn of Lynchburg, Virginia and his long time friend Ms. Hathaway G. Price of Jacksonville, NC. He is survived by his nephew Dr. Harvey J. Hamrick and wife Ann of Chapel Hill, NC; his great nephews and nieces Dr. James Hamrick and wife Dr. Shannon Hamrick of Atlanta, Georgia; Ms. Anna Hamrick Snead and husband Sam of Asheville, NC; Mrs. Robin H. Heiderscheit and husband John of Bettendorf, Iowa; and Ms. Natalie Hamrick and partner Veronica Smith of Seattle, Washington. Additionally, his memory is cherished by his Godchild Karianne Carter and long time friends Mr. John T. Carter, Jr. and wife Faye; John T. \"Trey\" Carter III and wife Liza; Kendra Billingsley; Ashton Carter Billingsley; and Mr. Henry Rhodes and wife Bonnie all of Jacksonville, NC.
