Kay Lynette Powell Brinkley departed her earthly life on the afternoon of Friday, August 7, 2026, while a resident of the Gardens of Rose Hill. Born on August 14, 1951, she is the daughter of the late James Frederick Powell and Wilma Irene Bond Powell. Also preceding her in death are sister—Thelma Powell; brother—Carl Powell; and close friends—Retha McCoy and Charlotte Dixon.
Left to cherish her memory are her son—Adam Hunt of Wallace; husband—James Brinkley of Wallace; Adam’s father John Wesley “Frankie” Hunt, Jr. of Wallace; and stepson—Jason Brinkley of Burgaw.
Mrs. Brinkley was born in Pender County and received her public education there. She later went to school to become a nail technician and spent time in this profession, while working also at Chloride in Burgaw for a period of time. Her main joy in life was taking care of her family as a homemaker. She was known as a loving mother and a sweet and kind lady. Along with some who knew her well, she referred to herself as “a five foot stick of dynamite” and sometimes “with a short fuse”.
Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
