Mr. Lacy Milton Hatchell, age 83, of Teachey, died Wednesday, June 8, at the Milford and Reba Quinn Hospice Care Center in Kenansville. Mr. Hatchell grew up in Fayetteville and lived in many places during his long career in business, but he most enjoyed his years as a Wallace businessman. In 1973, he and his wife, Almena Hatchell, bought the Western Auto store in Wallace and they operated it for more than three decades, along the way changing its name to Western-Mufflex. For several years, they also owned a convenience store they called Hurri-Upp. He was a 1944 graduate of Seventy-First High School in Fayetteville. Immediately after graduation, during the Second World War, he joined the U.S. Merchant Marine. During the war, he lost his brother, James, killed while serving in the U.S. Army in Europe. For many years, Mr. Hatchell was active with the Shrine Club in Wallace. He originally became a Shriner in Dallas, where he worked for American Greetings. He was preceded in death by his son, Lacy Milton Hatchell Jr.; parents, James and Florence Hatchell; brother James Hatchell and sisters Kathryn Jackson and Thelma Phillips. He is survived by his wife, Almena Hatchell of the home; daughter Candace Cox and her husband, Kevin Cox, of Davidson County; daughter Leslie Leighton and her husband, Doug Leighton, of Charleston, S.C.; son Andy Hatchell and his wife, Melinda Hatchell, of Davidson County; grandchildren Tyler Cox of Carrboro, Cassie Cox of Winston-Salem, Kelsey Jensen of Asheville and Patrick Jensen of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; and sister Helen Jones of Fayetteville.
