Obituary

Naomi McGregor Carr of Wallace, North Carolina, age 96, passed away on Saturday, September 1. 2012. Naomi was born on June 4, 1916 near Laurinburg. She was the daughter of Daniel Jackson McGregor and Jessie Lyde Mason McGregor. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Arminius Johnson Carr, brothers, Paul B. McGregor, D. J. McGregor, J. Mason McGregor and a niece, Jane McGregor Allison. After graduating from McColl-Fletcher Memorial High School (SC), where she was an honor student and guard on the basketball team, Naomi attended business school. Later she worked in retail merchandising for several department stores in North and South Carolina. While always eager to work, she balanced her professional life with the needs of her family. For 25 years she was a sales representative for The Wallace Enterprise. Later in life she worked in an administrative office at the local tobacco warehouse, at the ASCS office (now Farm Service Agency), the tax office of Duplin County and David's Gift Shop. But Naomi's life centered primarily on her church, her family, and her flowers. She was a member of the Wallace United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, taught Sunday School over 40 years and held numerous leadership positions. Her love for flowers never faded and her yard reflected years of dedication. She shared that interest as a long-time active member of the Wallace Garden Club. Naomi's passion for education endured a life time as well. At an advanced age she took courses in interior design, real estate and art. She enjoyed sports, especially ACC basketball, which she followed with great enthusiasm. She was a fitness walker as long as her health allowed and later took water aerobic classes at the Wilmington YMCA. Naomi is survived by her daughter Susan Carr Gossman and husband Richard of Wallace, NC; her son A.J. Carr and his wife Nancy of Raleigh, NC; grandsons Greg Carr and wife Danette; Brad Carr and wife Caroline; five great grandsons, Huntley, James, Mason, William and Baker; all of Raleigh; nieces Mary Elizabeth Shough and husband Aaron of Winston-Salem, and Margaret Montana and husband John Owen of Greensboro. The family is grateful to Shannon Casteen and DeAnne Batchelor of Rosemary, an assisted living facility in Rose Hill, and each Rosemary staff member for their dedication and loving care. A special thank you is given to Joy Whaley and Laurie Willoughby for their long service of care. A heartfelt appreciation also is given to Bea Shearin, Lucy Orengia, Annie Rice and Carolina East Home Care & Hospice.

Serving as pallbearers are A.J. Cavenaugh, Henry Campbell, Robert Matthews, Knott Teachey, Jimmy Dunn, Francis Townsend, Thomas Townsend, Johnny Hardison, Bobby Ward and Brant Waters. The family requests that donations be made to the Wallace United Methodist Church, 301 South College Street, Wallace, NC 28466 or the Naomi McGregor Carr and Arminius Johnson Carr, Sr. Christian Ministry Fund in care of the United Methodist Foundation, 700 Waterfield Ridge Place, Garner, NC 27529.
