Mr. Roy Lee Benton, age 80 of Wallace, NC, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2013 at Lower Cape Fear Hospice in Wilmington, NC. Memorial services will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at Corinth Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Matthew Burris, Reverend Byron Murray and Reverend Andy Beard. Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 27 at 1 pm at Riverview Memorial Park in Watha, NC. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Shirley \"Lib\" Benton of Wallace, NC, four daughters, Dianne Benton Murray and husband Byron of Beulaville, NC, Teresa Benton Cooper of Wallace, NC, Sandra Benton Lanier of Burgaw, NC and Patricia Annette Pierce of California, five grandchildren, Eric Murray and wife Morgan of Wallace, NC, Patrick Murray of Beulaville, NC, Melissa Jones of Wallace, NC, Jason Pierce of Dana Point, CA and Kyle Pierce of West Hollywood, CA, two great grandchildren, Jocelyn Jones and Carrlee Jack Murray, a brother, Harold Benton and wife Barbara of Teachey, NC and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Born May 6, 1933 in Rose Hill, NC, Mr. Benton was the son of the late William Thomas and Wilma (Knowles) Benton. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Powell, Eva Leonard and Ann Milton and three brothers, Hubert Benton, Gerald Benton and Jim Benton.
Mr. Benton was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. In years past, he enjoyed talking on the CB radio (his handle was \"Recap\"), riding horses and riding his motorcycle. He enjoyed woodwork, cooking his famous BBQ chicken on the grill and watching old westerns on TV. He also loved sitting on the back porch watching birds; hummingbirds were his favorite. His family was his life. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mr. Benton worked and retired after more than 40 years from E & B Tire Sales in Wallace. Mr. Benton attended Rose Hill High School.
