Obituary

THELMA PINER MALPASS, of Roanoke, VA and formerly of Jacksonville, FL passed away quietly on November 13, 2013, at age 84 after a long and progressive illness. She was born on September 17, 1929, the youngest child of Archie Henry Piner and Mary Den Rivenbark Piner in Willard, NC. She grew up in Willard and graduated as the Salutatorian of her class at Penderlea High School. She married Herman Lee Malpass of Wallace, NC. They lived briefly in El Paso, TX while he was in the Army during the Korean War, then returned to live in Wilmington, NC. She had fond memories of her travel with Herman to Chicago, her cross country trip with Herman from El Paso to Wilmington via New Orleans, and her travel to Washington, DC with Herman and her sister-in-law Helen. She had fond memories of her childhood and many stories of playing with her brothers and sisters. She and Herman moved to Jacksonville, FL, with their two sons in 1960 when Herman's job with the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was transferred there. In early life, she worked as a sales clerk at JC Penney in El Paso and Wilmington, then returned to that job in Jacksonville, FL in 1969. She worked there until 1989, when she retired to devote herself to caring for Herman in the last year of his life. She resided in Jacksonville, FL for 51 years, moving to live with her son in Roanoke, VA as her health began to fail. She loved baseball and was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Tampa Bay Rays. She loved to cook for her family. She made a great plate of fried cornbread. She made a wonderful raisin cake. She made great hush puppies to go with Herman's eastern NC barbeque. She enjoyed taking pictures of her family. She enjoyed assembling jigsaw picture puzzles, and she spent hours working word puzzles. She loved to write and receive family letters. She was a very loving and devoted wife and mother, and she was very giving in her selfless devotion to her family. Her life revolved around the love of her husband, her two children, and later her five grandchildren. She spoke of them often in the waning years of her life, when she was no longer able to travel and visit. She treasured phone calls, letters, and cards from all of the family. She enjoyed reminiscing about life even as her memory failed her for recent events. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and five of her siblings (Robert Piner, Edith Padgett, Lorene Stevens, Luke Jamon Piner, and David Piner). She is survived by two beloved sisters (Mary Cavanaugh of Rose Hill, NC and Martha Rivenbark of Wallace, NC), her beloved sister (-in-law) Helen Nash of Wilmington, NC, her sons (Michael Alan Malpass of Roanoke, VA and Charles Mark Malpass of Jacksonville, FL), her daughters-in-law (Diane Malpass of Roanoke, VA and Debora Malpass of Jacksonville, FL), her five grandchildren (Jason Malpass, Christopher Malpass, and Thomas Malpass of Jacksonville, FL; Sarah Malpass of Charlottesville, VA; and Laura Malpass of Concord, CA), her sister-in-law (Mary Elizabeth Piner of Holly Ridge, NC), and a host of nephews and nieces. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed, and she will live on in all of our hearts. Funeral services will be held at Padgett's Funeral Home in Wallace, NC at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 23, 2013, with family visitation at Padgett's Funeral Home at 7:00 PM on Friday, November 22, 2013. Interment will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Wilmington, NC, to lie at rest and at peace beside Herman once again.
