Obituary

Mr. Wilbur Lane Turner of Wallace, age 83, died December 18, 2011, at his residence. He was born in Halifax County on May 14, 1928, the son of the late Leon George and Sadie (Stowe) Turner and was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Allen Turner and William George Turner and three sisters, Ann Hair Carr, Alton Earl Turner and Gladys Gertrude Turner. Wilbur was a kind hearted husband, father, and friend to many. He was a devoted Christian and he first and foremost loved Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. He witnessed to many during his lifetime. He previously served his church as a deacon and was dedicated to the service of God. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean War Conflict. He was a lineman, and was wounded during combat twice during the war. He received the Purple Heart medal with an Oak Leaf as a reminder of his dedication to this country. Wilbur had a love for many things including flying, fishing, hunting, and musical instruments. He played with bands during the early years and at the Watha Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church later in life on many occasions. He was an accomplished guitarist and was talented on the harmonica as well. He composed his own music. He was owner of the Wallace Variety Store in downtown Wallace for many years and was also mechanically gifted. He was loved by his neighbors, family and friends and was generous to everyone. He spent his last hours on this earth playing the guitar and harmonica. He will be sorely miss by all. In addition to his wife, Daisy Garriss Turner of 48 years are: three daughters, Terri Turner Hare and husband Jack of Tamarac, Fl, Judy Turner Sholar and husband Kent of Raleigh, NC and Dawn Turner Cavenaugh and husband Sambo of Wallace, NC, a son, Timothy Lane Turner of Newport, NC, five grandchildren, Brittany Turner, Ashley Turner, Philip Cavenaugh, Casey Gill and Jamie Jaggon. Casket bearers are: Sam Wells, Ellis Turner, Mark Batts, Bobby Hill, Jay Garriss and Arnold Marshburn. Honorary casket bearers are David Watson, Alan Garriss, Douglas Wood, Gregg Foley and Leon McMillan.
