Obituary

William Jacob Carr, Jr., 92, of 305 Japonica Drive, Camden, NC died Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at Kindred Health Care in Elizabeth City, NC. He was born September 2, 1923, in Duplin County to the late William Jacob Carr and Gladys Pickett Carr and was the husband of Mildred Edwards Carr for seventy-three years. He was a Presbyterian. A US Navy veteran, Mr. Carr enlisted on 21 September 1940 and was subsequently assigned to the USS Conyngham (DD-371) in Pearl Harbor, HI. On December 7, 1941, he witnessed the two-hour attack on the Pacific Fleet from the Conyngham's deck, loading ammunition in the ship's 5-inch guns. After the War, and having achieved the rank of Chief Boatswain's Mate, he left the military service and settled in Norfolk, VA. There he started a Civil Service Career with the Army and became a missile maintenance supervisor before retiring in 1975.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Jackie Crabtree and husband, John of Camden, NC; a son, William Gardner and wife, Louise of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters, Joyce Freeman of Willard, NC and Eris Nagle of Wilmington, NC; a brother, Charles Carr of LA; five grandsons, Michael Shepherd, Jason Shepherd, Timmy Shepherd, Jr., David Carr, and Paul Carr; and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers, Tom Carr and Dawson Carr.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
