Debra Kay Gavin Stokes of Rose Hill, NC, passed from her earthly life to her heavenly home on the late evening of Tuesday, August 15, 2023, while at The Magnolia in Clinton, NC. Born on March 10, 1955, she is the daughter of the late Thelma Hood Williams and Henry Lee Gavin II. Also preceding her in death is a daughter--Kimberly Kay Stokes.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband--Melvin Douglas Stokes, Sr; children--Douglas Stokes, Jr. and wife Amanda of Wallace, Christy Phan and husband Tom of Smithfield, and Jennifer Cole and husband Chris of Pink Hill; grandchildren--Dustin Stokes and wife Laken of Chinquapin, Cody Stokes of Rose Hill, Troy Stokes of Wallace, Ayden Cole and wife Brittany of Beulaville, and Vayda Cole of Pink Hill; great grandson--Cooper, who will be coming into the world very soon; siblings--Henry Gavin and wife Kate of Naples (FL) and Audrey Williams of Roseboro; and her very dear canine friend--Bandit.
Debra was born in Sampson County but later moved to Duplin County where she spent most of her life. She enjoyed shopping, clothing, crocheting, and riding in the car to any destination. She loved her Lord and her church--Island Creek Baptist Church dearly. Her grandchildren were the most important thing on earth to her, in the happiness they brought to her life. Her favorite greeting to her friends was "You have a good day and don't let anyone mess it up". The family would like to extend their gratitude to Centerwell Home Health, Gentiva Hospice, and the staff of The Magnolia of Clinton for their wonderful care during Mrs. Stokes final days.
A service to celebrate her life is set for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2023, in the chapel of Padgett Funeral & Cremation Services in Wallace. The family will greet friends at a visittion one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in the J.A. Stokes Cemetery on Stokes Town Road, Wallace.
