Harold Dean Benton of Teachey, NC departed his earthly life at about midday on Monday, December 13, 2021, while at Vidant Duplin Hospital in Kenansville, NC. Born in Duplin County on December 14, 1942, he is the son of the late William Thomas and Louise Whaley Benton. Also preceding him in death are siblings— Hubert Benton, Roy Benton, Jim Benton, Gerald Benton, Margaret Powell, Eva Leonard, and Ann Milton.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of fifty-eight years— Barbara Ann Shackelford Benton; sons— Chad Stewart Benton of Los Angeles (CA) and Brian Neil Benton and wife Keeley of Chesapeake (VA); his brothers and sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and his “best buddy Gibbs”.
Mr. Benton spent a great deal of his career in the military of the United States, having served in the Navy, the Coast Guard, and the Air Force. He later worked in the air conditioning field as a commercial service technician. Known as a “giver”, he loved to joke with others and laugh with them. He enjoyed food, talking with others, and anything mechanical, especially his restored ‘48 Chevrolet. More than anything else on earth, he loved his family and was a super father and husband.
A memorial service to celebrate his life is set for 2:00 PM on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at the 401 West Main Street chapel of Padgett Funeral and Cremation Services in Wallace. Family will greet friends directly after the service. Officiating the service will be the Reverend Byron Murray. Family suggests that donations be considered to the American Cancer Society rather than floral remembrances.
