Shirley Faye Hooker Carraway of Wallace, NC departed her earthly life early Sunday morning, February 9, 2020 while at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Center in Wilmington, NC. Born on July 14, 1937, she was the daughter of the late John Steven and Celithia Hazel Patterson Hooker. She was also preceded in death by her husband Luther Edward Carraway; sister—Doris Morgan; brothers—Howard Hooker, Jerry Hooker, Perry Hooker, Bobby Hooker, and Jim “Totsy” Hooker; and grandson—Junior Croom.
Left to cherish her memory are daughters—Pamela Register and husband Ray of Wallace, Regina Bodzinski and husband Jon of Beulaville, and Mylinda Halso and husband Tim of Wallace; grandchildren—Tammy Bowen and husband Jason of Stephenson, VA, Junior Croom, Frankie Croom of Stephenson, VA, Tyler English of Wallace, Brandon Thigpen and wife Mary Susan Beasley of Wallace, Ashleigh Thigpen of Wilmington, Randal Jones and wife Farrah of Wallace, Robin English of Willard, Colby English of Willard, Matthew Register of Wallace, Victoria Register of Willard, Kayla Register of Rose Hill, Jonathan Bodzinski of Richlands, and Joshua Bodzinski of Richlands; brother—Billy Hooker and wife Judy of High Point; and numerous great grandchildren.
Mrs. Carraway worked for J.P. Stevens in Wallace for a number of years before her retirement. There are not many people on earth who loved the mountains more than Mrs. Shirley so it was not unusual for she and Mr. Carraway to “sneak away” to the mountains without the knowledge of the family. While at home, she enjoyed canning vegetables, embroidering, shopping, trips out to eat, and riding around the countryside. It was understood by everyone in the family that, if anyone planned a fishing trip to the beach, it was in their best interest to let her know. She loved family dearly especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Family will greet friends at a visitation on Tuesday night, February 11, 2020 from 6:00 til 8:00 p.m. at Padgett Funeral & Cremation Services of Wallace. A service to celebrate her life will be held at the graveside in Riverview Memorial Park on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.
