Wiley Bryant Henderson of Chapel Hill, NC and Wallace, NC, died suddenly near his home on January 9, 2023. He was the son of the late David N. Henderson and Mary Knowles Henderson, of Wallace.
Bryant attended schools in Wallace and graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School in 1968, moving on to the University of North Carolina, where he obtained his teaching degree in National and International History and Government. He taught high school and middle school in various schools in North Carolina for over 30 years, and worked at James Sprunt Community College for a number of years in Curriculum Development.
He loved history and read voraciously. He had an eye for detail and an almost-photographic memory for historical connections and facts. He was an avid musician and enjoyed playing music from 19th and 20th century America. For many years, he enjoyed Civil War "Living History" and reenactments, and organized the Huckleberry Brothers Civil War band, appearing at many events around the country.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lynn Johnson Henderson, of Chapel Hill, NC; a daughter, Jean Marie Whaley (Michael) of Garner, NC; a son, Alexander Henderson, of Wilmington, NC; and a much beloved grandaughter, Bess Whaley. He is also survived by two brothers, D. Bruce Henderson (Cindy) of Carrboro, NC; and Wimbric ("Bric") Henderson (Kim), of Pink Hill, NC. Family asks that, rather than floral arrangements, consideration be given for a contribution to the American Battlefield Trust--Post Office Box 1751--Merrifield, VA 22116. A service will be planned for the near future.
