William Lafayette “Bill” Hussey, 96, of Wallace, NC passed from his earthly life at midday on Thursday, October, 28, 2021 while at home. Born on March 30, 1925, he is the son of the late William Lafayette Hussey, Sr and Mildred Stark Hussey. Also preceding him in death is his son—James Alton Hussey.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife—Mildred Brinson Hussey of the home; daughter—Lafayia Hussey and husband John Pridgen of Raleigh; granddaughter—Georgia Lee Hussey of Portland, Oregon; extended members of his and his wife’s families; and a multitude of friends to whom he was devoted and shared world experiences. He also has a special close relationship with the Oswald family—Ann Davis and Gary Weaver and Michael and Mary Hart Blackburn. He viewed Mary Lila and Lizzie O as his own grandchildren, while they returned his love.
Mr. Hussey followed in the footsteps of his family and was a tobacconist, operating warehouses in Wallace, Georgia, and Kentucky. He developed the concept of the Scotsman Convenience Store when he worked for the Worsley Company. He was a magistrate for more than twenty years in the Wallace office. When asked about this profession, as well as any other, he said, “There is a satisfaction when you can resolve something that is within the law and everyone is better off. This is a job where what you try for most is that people say you were fair and reasonable. If that happens, you know you’ve done a good job.” He went by this philosophy in every part of his life and taught others as well. Also a Mason, he enjoyed the fellowship and comradery gained in his experience. He graduated from the University of Phoenix in 2012 with a bachelor in science degree, at the age of eighty-six. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church for over eighty years and cherished the church, the members, and the clergy. Family asks for anyone who would like, to follow the dictates of one’s heart in giving of flowers, memorial gifts to a favorite charity, or simple acts of kindness.
A graveside service to celebrate his life is set for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 31, 2021, in Riverview Memorial Park—9322 Hwy 117 North—Watha, NC 28478. Friends are welcome to visit the residence in Wallace to share memories of his life. Padgett Funeral & Cremation Services is serving the Hussey family.
